Regarding Allegations of Teacher Misconduct

April 21, 2023

During the past several weeks various allegations of professional misconduct have been made against a Gateway Elementary School teacher.  These allegations were initiated by the parents of one student who is no longer enrolled in the district, in some cases on social media platforms, but never directly to me or to other central office administrators.  The allegations claim unprofessional conduct by the teacher in the classroom, which  allegedly occurred several months ago.

The teacher in question is an experienced, exemplary elementary teacher. This teacher’s classes are orderly, educationally stimulating, and enjoyable.  This teacher is often requested by parents for their children.  This teacher’s record is unblemished.

The District has investigated every allegation by interviewing the teacher, other teachers, students, and other building staff members.  The purpose was to seek the truth and if necessary, take appropriate action.  The District did not attempt to minimize the allegations or avoid the facts.

Throughout this process the District was sensitive to the social, emotional and educational needs of everyone involved.  At all times the District and the staff at Gateway maintained a safe and secure educational environment.

In every instance, the District found the allegations to be totally unfounded or at most, a gross exaggeration of normal student – teacher classroom interaction.

The Board of Education, administration and staff of this District take seriously our responsibility to the students and parents of the District, as well as our duty to provide a safe and nurturing educational environment.  Students, parents, and citizens of the District can be confident that we do not shirk our duty, hide the truth, or fail to take action when warranted.  And we did none of these with this matter.

I am always available to discuss matters of concern, and I welcome the opportunity to share the many wonderful things that are happening in our schools.  I am in all our buildings on a weekly basis. Please do not hesitate to email me at lriley@cacsk12.org or call me at 440-593-7201.  I look forward to speaking with you.
